Two U.S. Olympians to be Announced

A day after the conclusion of what turned out to be a fairly thrilling and satisfying Stanley Cup final series, U.S.A. Hockey announced that it will reveal the first two members of the men’s ice hockey team that will compete for Olympic gold in Vancouver in 2010.

A press conference will be held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Colorado Springs on Friday at which point the identity of the two players will be revealed. The announcement will be made at 6:45 Eastern time on Friday.

Rick DiPietro? Chris Drury? Scott Gomez? Zach Parise? Your guess is as good as ours.

It will likely be the starting goaltender and the team Captain – Ryan Miller and Chris Drury.

    1) Why????????????? Is this a joke? Two years is a eternity in hockey terms. Why the rush to make an announcement now?
    2) Here’s a suggestion. Announce in the fall of 2009 a list of 30 or so potential players then after the New year finalize the roster based upon who is injury free and playing the best at that particular time. Making this announcement eliminates roster spots from another player who may be a no brainer in 2 years.
    3) is Don Waddell still making these silly/bad decisions?

I am not a fan of these early announcements, in this case for a tourney in early 2010. I assume you received a press release that indicates it will be about naming 2 players, because the information on the website is vague, just indicating a big announcement is coming.

If I had to guess 2 players, I’d say Parise and Drury? Unless they want to make a splash by naming someone like Kane this early.

Why name anyone, but especially a goalie this early; if it is a goalie, while I think there is a good possibility of Ryan Miller being on the team, I’d think DiPietro would be more likely to be named at this time.

Thanks for the heads up; it will be interesting to see what they announce.

The announcement said first two members … it did not say players. I bet it is the management team.

Well, naming 2 members of the management team makes a lot more sense at this time, which is why I asked if it specifically mentioned naming players.

  6. Mike L Says:

Heh, it would make sense to announce the members of the organization, meaning the GM and head coach (John Tortorella as coach?)

  7. Nicky Says:

tkdjf was right!!! Burke & Poile. pretty sly…

How about a Chelios – Rafalski third pairing? Although we’d have to think of a nickname that incorporated “AARP,” “God’s waiting room,” or “early bird special.”
