Clymer Clears

Ben Clymer cleared re-entry waivers today, but it does not change his status. He is still a member of the Hershey Bears. Alexander Semin was activated from IR today, and will “probably” play in tonight’s home opener against Carolina.

No word on any other lineup changes. I got in late (actually, early) from Atlanta and had to finish the post-game stuff and then do the preview stuff for tonight, so I was not at Kettler this morning. If I hear anything more, I’ll pass it along on the 3 p.m. Pre-Cap podcast.

5 minutes to go in the first period of the home opener as I write this, and the Caps are undoubtedly a better hockey team than the ‘Canes. This is phenomenal…

I said that the Caps had a great coach… I am now convinced of it with the way he put the team together and then handled the lines in the 3rd. By having Steckel and Laich on the 4th line, he was able to move them up into the top two lines, replacing Fleischmann and Semin, and suddenly, there are three lines with at least two above average defensive players (jury is still out on Backstrom after only 2 games, and Ovie, for all his plusses, is only average defensively, while Nylander and Kozlov are solid defensively.)

I like how the Caps have been able to go right after teams from the opening and not let up, although by the third period against Carolina there were some tired legs out there, plus Carolina is a decent hockey team.

One thing though that troubles me a bit about Saturday is that the ‘Canes were missing two of their better defensemen in Commodore and Hedican. I’d like to see how the Caps do with both of them in the line-up and healthy. I suspect they’re still better, but those two guys really are an asset to Carolina.
