Deadline Day, 2:30 p.m.

Sorry for the lack of updates over the last hour, as you no doubt know by now, Dainius Zubrus is a member of the Buffalo Sabres. He and defenseman Timo Helbling went to Buffalo for the Sabres’ No. 1 pick in 2007 and center Jiri Novotny, a former first-round choice. The Caps got more for Zubrus than St. Louis got for Billy Guerin.

I’ve been in the Caps’ war room with George McPhee and the scouting staff here, at George’s invitation, for the last hour-plus. It’s been quite an enlightening experience, and I’ll write more about it when I get a chance. The phone calls are still going back and forth in here, with less than 30 minutes to go until deadline.

The Caps still have a few irons in the fire here, so another deal or two may materialize.

    Thanks for the update Mike.

I bet heward is next. I also heard that Bertuzzi is on his way to Detroit

  2. Matt T. Says:

What are you front office idiots thinking??? You trade away Zubrus for Novotny and a pick?? Helbling can go, he’s a bum, but Zubrus??? This is the dumbest trade since Bondra was traded!!! It seems like you wanna trade every Capital that wants to stay in D.C.

  3. Jeroen Says:

Thanks for the continuous updates, Mr. V!

Out of curiosity, how do you think Novotny will play into the Caps’ system? Being a former first-round choice, you’d expect he may have some impact on our future, but according to, he’s expected to become a 3rd-line center?

    Matt T:

If Zubrus was not going to resign then they would have lost him in the offseason for NOTHING. Atleast GMGM got a draft pick and a body.

I liked Zubrus, but this is a business. I am hoping the Caps make a big splash in the offseason free agent market.

  5. Jeroen Says:

    @Matt T:
I don’t think we can truly judge the results of this trade until Zubrus signs a contract sometime between now and next season. He cannot do much more for us here for the remainder of this season, and if he chooses to resign with us in the summer than we’ve come off incredibly well in this trade.

  6. Why do you compare this deal with Guerins? What do they two have to do with each other.

Anyways, I don’t like this deal. IMHO, we were better off resigning him than getting two gigantic unknowns for a franchise that has no idea where its headed. Absolutely no clue what so ever. The team isnt getting better, the players are losing all motivation and no body is improving because of this.

I’ll be the first to say, this trade is awful.

  7. Matt Says:

Why do I compare the deals ? Because Guerin is a better player and they got less for him. We are REBUILDING, people. Does anybody else know what that means ? Pittsburgh was god awful for 5 straight years.

  8. Matt T. Says:

thanks for agreeing capitalpunishment, our front office seems to have no real direction, and that just sucks. i checked out novotny’s season stats and we definitely got the raw end of the deal. he only has 13 measely points. and the pick we get will be late first round, and that doesn’t gaurentee talent. whats next, we trade ovie for a skate sharpener?

  9. pauliina Says:

    haha. i like u Matt T.
Trading Zubie is the stupidest thing EVER! ah well… atleast he gets to be in the playoffs. he deserves that. so go Zubie.. ur still my hero :D.

  10. pwnzor Says:

OMG! this is the worst trade ever! i mean i can understand the need to trade some people away, i could even bare loosing heward…but zubrus!! hes practicly family to the caps!! this is the worst trade ever!

  11. Rich Says:

When is Ted going to wise up and see the problem with the team is George McPhee and the coaching. So with this trade we have no center talent at all. I feel sorry for Ovie, working for a team that’s not giving him any support. Good job George! George if the on ice product is not any good people will not buy ticktes to see the Cap’s play.

  12. AGP Says:

This is a typical cut and run trade. The Caps Management could have ponied up for Zubrus on a 4-5 deal for 3 million which over the next five years and had a solid right winger to go with Ovechkin. Zubrus is a mucker and would have faired nicely with the likes of Brier or Gomez centering he and Ovechkin. But no, this management is bent on selling their mission of getting younger. The reason the blues did not get a warm body is because Guerin is 35 or 36. Zubrus is 28 and will sign with the Sabres when they loose Brier and or Drury. But neither one of those two aformentioned centers are coming to this purgatory. The new practice facility is great but that is not the ultimate lure for talent. This is a B level team and it all comes down to economics. Don’t expect any big signings this summer gang!

  13. John Says:

Quit your whining evryone! Zubrus wasn’t going to re-sign so GMGM got what he could. This is worst than the Bondra deal??? Where is Bondra now and what has he done since he left the Caps? Not too much the last I heard. I have to admit at first I was thinking the same thing as you , why did they do that, but now I can honesly say I don’t miss him. I thnk GMGM and Teddy boy are doing the right thing by getting younger.

  14. El Davo Says:

Thank you for ZUBRUS!!!! im a displaced sabres fan living in DC and have watched him play many times at your Verizon center. This kids gonna give the Sabres every thing they need to get over the injuries and wreak havok in the playoffs. Honestly Novotny isnt bad, and that first round pick will be great for you, Zubrus was leavin anyway, see you in the playoffs next year.

  15. Bob Jones Says:

    Test comment….

  16. haha Says:

    zuby did nothing but good
